South Africa’s Woolworths was named Responsible Retailer of the Year at the 2010 World Retail Awards – the second time in the past three years that the local company has scooped the prestigious award.
The awards ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 2010 World Retail Congress in Berlin, Germany this week.
The entries were reviewed by a peer panel of some of the world’s most respected retailers and industry experts, with Woolworths beating strong competition from five other short-listed nominees:
Woolworths said the award was confirmation that the company is on the right track in doing business in a truly sustainable manner, especially when it came to transformation, saving energy, farming for the future and conserving water.
“Our Good Business Journey is now beginning to be a pervasive part of how we do business and how we grow value for our stakeholders – customers, shareholders, staff, suppliers and the broader community,” Woolworths CEO Simon Susman said in a statement.
“Our brand is based on a set of deep values. This award reflects them all, but in particular the value of sustainability.”
