Afrikaner Voices Rejecting Division, Affirming a Shared South African Future

As South Africa marks Freedom Month, a time to reflect on the values enshrined in our constitutional democracy, a group of Afrikaners has added its voice to the ongoing global conversation about identity, justice, and nationhood. Their message is clear: South Africa’s story is not one of division, but of resilience, unity in diversity, and a shared commitment to building a just and inclusive society.

In a recent collective statement, these South Africans expressed concern over the growing international mischaracterisation of Afrikaner identity—particularly narratives emerging in the United States that portray Afrikaners as victims of racial persecution in democratic South Africa. Such narratives, they argue, are not only misleading but undermine the very principles that define the country’s journey since 1994.

South Africa’s democratic transition stands as one of the most remarkable examples of peaceful transformation in modern history. Rooted in the values of human dignity, equality, and freedom, the nation continues to grapple with complex challenges, including inequality, crime, and the enduring legacy of apartheid. However, these challenges are not borne by any single group—they are shared across society and require collective solutions.

The signatories emphasise that to elevate one community’s experience above others distorts the broader South African reality. It risks reinforcing harmful global narratives that thrive on division rather than dialogue. In doing so, it detracts from the country’s ongoing work of social cohesion and inclusive development—key pillars of nation building.

At the heart of their message is a rejection of attempts to politicise and appropriate Afrikaner identity for ideological agendas, both locally and abroad. They affirm that no single organisation or movement can claim to represent the diversity of Afrikaans-speaking communities. Instead, they highlight the richness within this community itself—diverse in thought, experience, and perspective, yet united by a shared commitment to South Africa’s future.

This perspective aligns strongly with Brand South Africa’s vision of a nation defined not by its divisions, but by its ability to harness diversity as a source of strength. The Afrikaans language and culture, like all others in South Africa, form part of a broader national tapestry—one that is continually evolving and enriched by the contributions of all who call the country home.

Importantly, the group also challenges the global misuse of humanitarian frameworks that seek to prioritise individuals based on race rather than vulnerability. Such approaches, they argue, undermine the integrity of international protection systems and contradict the values of fairness and justice that South Africa upholds.

Their call is ultimately one of responsibility—urging both South Africans and the international community to engage with the country’s realities in a nuanced and informed manner. It is a call to reject simplified narratives and to recognise the dignity, agency, and shared humanity of all South Africans.

More than three decades into democracy, South Africa continues to write its story—one shaped by resilience, dialogue, and the collective will to overcome the past. This story is carried not by one community, but by all—bound together by a deeply rooted spirit of Ubuntu: I am because we are. It is this shared ethos that has enabled South Africans, across race, language and history, to endure, to rebuild, and to move forward together.

In a world often drawn to division, South Africa offers a different narrative—one of courage, compassion, and coexistence. Our resilience is not isolated; it is collective. Our future is not fragmented; it is shared. And in choosing unity over fear, and truth over distortion, we reaffirm a national identity grounded in dignity, solidarity, and the enduring belief that our strength lies in one another.
