November 2025 will see the world’s leading economies converge for the G20 Summit in South Africa. Ahead of this highly anticipated gathering, a powerful and often overlooked voice resonated: that of the global youth. South Africa hosted the G20 Youth Summit (Y20) from 18-22 August, where young leaders from G20 countries and invited guest nations convened to present their vision and policy recommendations. These proposals connect diplomacy with inclusive economic growth, technology, conservation and African unity, positioning youth as architects of future global policy. Through their distinctive outlook, the youth advocated for sustainable economic growth, increased youth opportunities and strategic investment across the world.
As a nation rich in diversity and a major player in both the Global South and the BRICS bloc, South Africa offers a unique perspective to the G20 table. Its youth have navigated complex socio-economic landscapes and possess a deep understanding of local and global challenges. They bring a fresh and often disruptive approach to problem-solving. The G20 Youth Summit (Y20), the first on African soil, gave platform to these voices to present their collective vision.
Held under the theme “Youth Building Bridges: Uniting for Solidarity, Championing Equality, Driving Sustainability,” the Summit concluded with the adoption of the Y20 Communiqué. This comprehensive policy document, containing recommendations from youth across the globe, will be presented to the G20 Leaders at their upcoming Summit in November 2025.
Diplomacy as the thread that’s weaving global solutions
At the core of the youth’s strategy was the belief that global challenges require integrated solutions. The Y20 delegates championed a framework where diplomatic efforts are not isolated, but serve as channels for progress across multiple sectors, as outlined in their Communiqué:
Technology and inclusive access
The Y20 Communiqué placed significant emphasis on inclusive access to technological advancements, especially when it comes to AI development and governance. Delegates advocated for policies that ensure digital literacy, support infrastructure development in underserved regions and establish ethical frameworks for AI that prevent bias and promote human-centric development. By linking technology to diplomacy, they sought international cooperation to bridge the digital divide, stressing the importance of affordable internet access to ensure technology benefits all.
Inclusive economic growth and employment
The Y20 delegates recognised the need for inclusive economic growth and employment, particularly for young people. Their proposals focused on entrepreneurship, innovation and equitable job creation. They advocated for investments in education and skills development that are responsive to future labour market demands, ensuring youth are equipped for the green and digital transitions. The Communiqué highlighted the importance of creating supportive ecosystems for young entrepreneurs, including access to finance, mentorship and digital tools. This, to stimulate economic strength and provide decent work opportunities for a young workforce.
Conservation for a sustainable future
South Africa has earned its name as a champion for global climate change prevention efforts, an honour powerfully demonstrated at the 2011 UN Climate Change Conference held in Durban. During the event, the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action was introduced, moving the world closer to unified climate action. Added that Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, conservation was a deeply personal matter for the Y20 delegates. This was a focal area for this year’s Y20 Summit, given that environmental sustainability is a key theme for the 2025 G20 Summit. The Communiqué emphasised the need for international cooperation on climate action and the protection of biodiversity, advocating for green jobs and a just transition towards sustainable economies.
Amplifying the African voice towards greater unity
Building on South Africa’s G20 presidency priorities, the Y20 has a focus on inclusive social development and fighting inequality. This shows their commitment to African unity and the amplification of African voices on the global stage. By tackling social disparities within African contexts, solutions will be rooted in the continent’s unique realities. With the upcoming UN World Summit for Social Development in November 2025, the Y20 was well positioned to amplify the voices of young people from Africa and the Global South. Ultimately, South Africa’s youth and the Y20 delegates are addressing continental challenges while unifying African perspectives and projecting them as essential contributions to global decision-making.
A blueprint for a better world
The Y20 Summit 2025 was a powerful display of the evolving landscape of global governance, where the voices of the future are taking their rightful place. Through the Y20 Communiqué, South Africa’s youth, alongside their global peers, laid down a comprehensive blueprint for a more equitable, sustainable and unified world. Their proactive engagement and the concrete recommendations put forth are a powerful reminder that true global progress requires the innovation and commitment of its youngest citizens.
